Ring of O

Story of O Fingerring

The Ring of O is a specially designed ring that has been worn by BDSM practitioners as a distinguishing mark since the 1990s. The ring is relatively common within this subculture. Its name derives from the protagonist of the classic BDSM novel *Story of O* (written by Anne Desclos under the pseudonym Pauline Réage), who wore a similar ring.

The ring's symbolic meaning in the novel differs significantly from its common meaning among today's BDSM practitioners. In the book, such a ring is worn by a female "slave" after she has completed her training at Roissy. Those who wear the ring are required to obey any man belonging to the secret society at Roissy (whose emblem is a triskelion) and must allow him to do whatever he wishes with them.

This stands in stark contrast to the ring's significance today. By wearing such rings, individuals indicate their interest in BDSM and sometimes signal—depending on which hand the ring is worn—whether they are dominant (Dom) or submissive (Sub).
